I hung around the kitchen a lot when I was a kid, helping mum crumb the schnitzels, stuff the peppers, always hungry and inquisitive. It’s not just fun to get kids helping in the kitchen, it’s an organic way to teach them that cooking is part of life. I think it’s important to get kids used to a variety of tastes and textures from an early age. I don’t like that idea of ‘I’ll cook something nice for the adults and the kids can have sausages’. If you don’t introduce flavours when you’re enjoying them then when will you? You’ll always be cooking two meals. What I will do is keep some rice or cous cous or pasta separate from the main dish and use that to tone down the flavours, or as a fallback if the main dish just isn’t working for my daughters.
